He served as Assistant Professor and Associated Professor in the Department of Molecular Physiology and Biophysics of Baylor College of Medicine (Houston, Texas, USA). He was also Visiting Professor in the Beijing University (1981) and Tsinghua University (1986). In 1991, he joined the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) as a founding faculty member. He was first appointed as Professor of Biology and then later became Chair Professor of Biology. He is now serving as Professor Emeritus and Adjunct Professor in the Division of Life Science in HKUST,

Prof. Chang was the founding President of the Hong Kong Biophysical Society. He also served as the Vice President of Hong Kong Institution of Science (HKIS). In addition, he is a Council Member of the Asian Biophysical Association, and a Corporate Member of the Marine Biological Laboratory at Woods Hole (USA). Prof. Chang was elected a Fellow of the Hong Kong Institution of Science at 2009.

His major research interests include molecular biophysics; regulation of cell division, signaling mechanisms of apoptosis; and living cell imaging technologies.
