Flaxseed orbitides are RiPPs that are readily extracted from flaxseed and flaxseed oil. The structures of orbitide encoding genes indicate several mechanisms that lead to substantial orbitide accumulation. These highly active production systems can be harnessed for commercial orbitide synthesis in flaxseed or through a modified organism. Ribosomal synthesis of small cyclic peptides would be an environmentally friendly alternative to chemical synthesis of these precursor proteins. The Canadian flaxseed crop contains over 700 tonnes of recoverable orbitide. Orbitides are robust molecules that may be modified through chemical reactions to produce a wide range of materials. For example, covalent linkage of flaxseed orbitides to compounds, proteins and solids might be used to produce useful products and building blocks. The orbitides form a uniquely stable group of compounds that have the diversity and plasticity of proteins but, due to their small size, are stable enough for efficient and specific chemical modification. Orbitides form host-guest complexes. We have produced Forster resonance energy transfer compounds that involve orbitides linked covalently to coumarin that also hold lanthanide molecules as guests. The use of such compounds is potentially wide ranging. For example, we are exploring applications of these compounds as components of organic light emitting diodes and as environmental sensors. With improved knowledge of orbitide genetics, production, chemistry and interactions they might be developed for use as a naturally occurring “Lego” set that can be used to make almost anything.

Martin J.T. Reaney教授,1980年,1985年分别于University of British Columbia,(英属哥伦比亚大学)本科毕业,University of Saskatchewan (萨斯喀彻温大学)硕士毕业,1989年University of Saskatchewan (萨斯喀彻温大学)博士毕业。现任University of Saskatchewan (萨斯喀彻温大学)农业与生物资源学院终生教授,萨斯喀彻温省农业部油脂质量与应用研究中心主席。Reaney教授致力于研究用于油脂作物及其高附加价值的商业生物制品的研究生产,Reaney教授的研究范围包括环肽化合物相关的一系列天然健康产品,药物,化妆品等,及其此类化合物的工业化和商业化技术研究。他与加拿大农业及农产品部合作Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada (AAFC)近15年(1990-2004),发表90篇SCI文章,220次会议报告,24项美国专利(4项世界专利),多次获得美国及加拿大颁发的创新奖项(Innovation Award)。近年他创立公司Prairie Tide Chemicals Inc,正将其团队近年来对于加拿大广泛种植的亚麻籽中含有的一系列化合物(环肽)的研究发现进行商业化。
