Gary Piazza received a Ph.D. in pharmacology from The University
of Alabama at Birmingham in 1985 and training in cancer research
at the Fox Chase Cancer Center from 1986-1988 as a postdoctoral
fellow and at Brown University from 1988-1989 as a Research
Assistant Professor. He held positions in the pharmaceutical industry
as a Staff Scientist with the Proctor and Gamble Company from
1989-1994 and Senior Research Director with Cell Pathways Inc.
from 1994-2001. Dr. Piazza was appointed the Director of
Pharmacology at the Institute for Drug Development from
2001-2003. From 2003-2011, Dr. Piazza served as a principal
investigator at Southern Research and as an adjunct professor in
pharmacology at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. During
this time, Dr. Piazza served as the Program Director for the NIH

Molecular Libraries Screening Center at Southern Research. In 2011,
Dr. Piazza joined the University of South Alabama, Mitchell Cancer
Institute in Mobile AL and currently holds the appointments of
Professor of Oncologic Sciences and Pharmacology, Program
Director of Drug Discovery and Chemoprevention, and Abraham A.
Mitchell Distinguished Investigator.
He directs a lab of 10 individuals including graduate students,
post-docs, and assistant professors with expertise in medicinal
chemistry, biochemistry, cell biology, and pharmacology. His lab is
equipped for medicinal chemistry and state-of-art robotic
instrumentation for high throughput screening. Dr. Piazza has served
as a full member of the NCI Chemo-dietary Prevention study section
and as an ad hoc reviewer for numerous NIH study sections. He has
published over 100 papers and is an inventor on multiple patents
relating to experimental anticancer drugs.
